Regional Day Trips
Independent destinations and a coach excursion option for exploring beyond Toulouse.

Explore Occitanie by Coach
Two easy day excursions from Toulouse: spend the day exploring medieval Carcassonne, or combine Albi and hilltop Cordes-sur-Ciel. Return coach transport gives you free time to discover the sights at your own pace. The Carcassonne coach typically departs Toulouse at 9:30 and returns around 17:45. The Albi/Cordes coach departs at 9:30, stays in Albi until around 14:30, continues to Cordes-sur-Ciel, and returns to Toulouse around 18:30.Departure point: 29 allée Jean-Jaurès, Place d’Arménie. Downloadable audio guides are included; attraction admissions and meals are generally extra. Dates and timetables vary by season, so confirm them with the operator before booking. This is especially useful if you want a day out without handling train changes or parking. It is a transport-and-audio-guide excursion, not a guide accompanying you through every monument.
Getting There
🚌 Coach — Meet at 29 allée Jean-Jaurès, Place d’Arménie (near Jean-Jaurès metro). Both excursions start in Toulouse and return there the same evening.
Check the operator’s calendar for the Carcassonne or Albi/Cordes dates; these are independent sightseeing days, not continuous guided tours.
Check current schedules, service changes and the return journey before setting out.Harry’s Take
A practical way to visit the region without hiring a car. You travel with the group, but explore each stop independently. My personal notes are still to come.

Albi
A red-brick cathedral that looks like a fortress, a remarkable painted interior, the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum and riverside views of the Tarn. The cathedral and museum can easily fill several hours. If visiting both, check admission and opening times before you travel.Wander through the cathedral quarter before heading to the gardens of the Palais de la Berbie for views over the Tarn.Albi rewards a slower pace: brick streets, quiet courtyards and a café stop are as much a part of the visit as its headline monuments.
Getting There
🚆 Train — Take a regional train from Toulouse-Matabiau to Albi-Ville (around 1 hour). The cathedral quarter is walkable from the station.
🚗 By car, follow the A68 towards Albi; use a public car park outside the pedestrian centre.
Check current schedules, service changes and the return journey before setting out.Harry’s Take
Start with Sainte-Cécile, then leave time to wander the old streets and riverside.

Carcassonne
Walk the lanes and ramparts of the medieval Cité, visit the Château Comtal and the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, then look back from the lower town. The railway station is in the lower town, not inside the medieval Cité. Leave time for the walk or local connection. The fortified hilltop is most atmospheric when you stray from the busiest souvenir streets.Walk around the outside of the walls for a sense of their scale, and consider the Château Comtal if you want to explore the ramparts from within.
Getting There
🚆 Train — Take a train from Toulouse-Matabiau to Carcassonne station, in the lower town. Allow additional time to walk or use local transport to reach the medieval Cité.
🚗 By car, follow the A61 and use signed parking near the Cité; the historic lanes are pedestrianised.
Check current schedules, service changes and the return journey before setting out.Harry’s Take
The fortified city is the star, but allow time to see it from outside the walls as well.

Cordes-sur-Ciel
Steep cobbled streets climb to a beautifully preserved bastide with Gothic houses, artisan shops and sweeping views of the countryside.Expect steep cobbles and steps. Check the onward bus connection if you travel without a car.The climb winds through medieval gateways and beautifully preserved stone façades, with views opening up as you rise.It is a place for unhurried wandering, browsing workshops and pausing at viewpoints rather than ticking off a long list of sights.
Getting There
🚌 Train + bus — A practical car-free route is a train to Albi, then liO bus 707 towards Cordes-sur-Ciel. Check both directions carefully before travelling; connections may be sparse.
🚗 A car is simpler, especially if you want to visit other Tarn villages. Expect an uphill walk from the lower parking areas.
Check current schedules, service changes and the return journey before setting out.Harry’s Take
Wear proper shoes; the climb is part of the experience, and the views earn it.

Foix
A compact old town under a dramatic three-towered medieval castle, with the Ariège valley and the foothills of the Pyrenees close by.The castle visit involves climbing; combine it with a relaxed circuit of the small historic centre. Its three castle towers dominate the skyline, making the approach almost as memorable as the visit. After exploring the castle, spend time in the lanes below and enjoy the mountain-town atmosphere before catching your return train.
Getting There
🚆 Train — Take a regional train from Toulouse-Matabiau to Foix (roughly 1 hour 10 minutes). The town and castle approach are accessible on foot from the station.
🚗 By car, head south via the A66/N20 corridor and follow local parking signs in Foix.
Check current schedules, service changes and the return journey before setting out.Harry’s Take
The castle is the obvious draw; make time for the streets at its foot.

Montauban
Elegant brick arcades around Place Nationale, the Ingres Bourdelle Museum and a pleasant historic centre make an easy cultural outing.Place Nationale is a natural starting point. Check museum exhibitions and opening days before setting off.The arcaded square is lovely for coffee or lunch, particularly if you enjoy people-watching.Add the streets around the old centre and the river viewpoints to turn a museum visit into a comfortable full-day outing.
Getting There
🚆 Train — Take a train from Toulouse-Matabiau to Montauban-Ville-Bourbon (roughly 30–35 minutes). The historic centre is beyond the station, so allow time to walk or use local transport.
🚗 By car, approach via the A62 and park near, rather than inside, the central streets.
Check current schedules, service changes and the return journey before setting out.Harry’s Take
A good choice when you want a relaxed day rather than a packed sightseeing marathon.

Auch
Explore the Gascon capital, its magnificent Sainte-Marie Cathedral, monumental staircase, medieval lanes and the local food traditions of the Gers. The upper town includes slopes and the monumental staircase. Build in time for the cathedral and lunch. The great staircase connects the lower and upper parts of town, so take your time on the ascent. The cathedral’s stained glass and carved choir stalls are worth a proper look, and the Gers is a fine excuse to linger over lunch.
Getting There
🚆 Train — Take a regional train from Toulouse towards Auch (around 1 hour 30 minutes). The station is in the lower part of town; allow time for the climb towards the cathedral.
🚗 By car, the approach is straightforward via the westbound road network; check central parking before arrival.
Check current schedules, service changes and the return journey before setting out.Harry’s Take
Come for the cathedral and stay long enough to enjoy a proper Gascon lunch.

Castres
Colourful old houses overlook the Agout River, while the historic centre and Goya Museum reward a slower wander. The Agout houses are particularly striking from across the river. The coach timetable deserves a check both ways. The riverside façades give Castres a distinctive look, but do not overlook the streets, squares and cafés behind them. The Goya Museum adds an art-focused reason to visit, particularly if you have a few hours between transport connections.
Getting There
🚌 Bus — The liO 760 coach connects Toulouse and Castres. Check the departure stop, return service and operating days before relying on it for a day trip.
🚗 By car, follow the route towards Castres and park outside the old centre, which is pleasant to explore on foot.
Check current schedules, service changes and the return journey before setting out.Harry’s Take
The riverside houses make the postcard, but take a look behind them too.
Saint-Cirq-Lapopie
A stone village high above the Lot River, all narrow lanes, medieval houses, artists’ workshops and astonishing valley views. The village is small but steep; combine it with a broader Lot-valley outing if you have a car.The best moments often come from stepping into a side lane or simply looking back over the river valley.Arrive with time to enjoy the atmosphere, and remember that parking areas and the historic village can be separated by an uphill walk.
Getting There
🚆 Train + bus — Travel from Toulouse to Cahors by train, then use liO bus 889 towards Tour-de-Faure. From the stop, expect a walk uphill to Saint-Cirq-Lapopie; seasonal bus 878 may offer another option.
🚗 A car is much easier for a single-day visit. Park in the designated areas below the village and walk up.
Check current schedules, service changes and the return journey before setting out.Harry’s Take
Give yourself time to stop and look around; this one is as much about atmosphere as monuments.
Moissac
The Romanesque cloister and sculpted portal of Saint-Pierre Abbey are the headline attractions, with the canal and Tarn nearby. The abbey cloister is the main cultural stop. A canal-side stroll makes a pleasant addition.Look closely at the sculpted capitals around the cloister; each tells its own little story. The abbey portal is another highlight, and the nearby canal paths offer a gentler contrast to the stonework and medieval history.
Getting There
🚆 Train — Take a regional train from Toulouse-Matabiau to Moissac (often around 50 minutes). The abbey and town centre can be reached on foot from the station.
🚗 By car, follow the A62 corridor and use a town-centre car park.
Check current schedules, service changes and the return journey before setting out.Harry’s Take
Don’t rush the cloister; look closely at the carved capitals.
Revel & Lac de Saint-Ferréol
A market town with a handsome central square, paired with the lake linked to the historic water supply of the Canal du Midi. The lake is separate from the town centre. Check how you will travel between them before you leave Toulouse.Revel’s market square and covered hall make a charming first stop, especially around market time.Saint-Ferréol is a different experience altogether: open water, wooded shores and space to slow down. Combining both makes the journey more rewarding.
Getting There
🚌 Bus — liO routes 356 and 357 connect Toulouse with Revel. Check the departure stop, service day and last return carefully.
🚗 For Revel together with Lac de Saint-Ferréol, a car is the simplest option: the lake is several kilometres from the town and onward public transport needs separate planning.
Check current schedules, service changes and the return journey before setting out.Harry’s Take
Combine the town with the lake rather than choosing between them; a car makes that easier.

Passerelle de Mazamet
Cross a 140-metre suspension bridge, 70 metres above the Arnette gorge, then explore medieval Hautpoul in the Montagne Noire. The crossing is free and open year-round. The bridge hangs high above a wooded valley, with the best views unfolding as you walk across.Continue into Hautpoul for its narrow lanes, old stone houses and viewpoints. The village and bridge make a satisfying half-day outing.Wear proper walking shoes and bring water. The approach is uphill, and the paths and bridge are unsuitable for anyone who needs step-free access.
Getting There
🚗 Car — Allow around 1 hour 30 minutes from Toulouse to Mazamet. Follow signs for the passerelle parking at 95 rue de la Resse; the marked walking routes take approximately 15 minutes (steep) or 45 minutes (gentler) to reach the bridge.
🚌 Public transport — Reaching Mazamet without a car is possible, but the bridge starts outside the centre and you must plan the onward journey and return carefully.
