La Gouaille restaurant interior

La Gouaille

La Gouaille is an affordable sit-down dinner option in the Carmes quarter. It is one to consider when you want to spend an evening over a proper meal but do not want the restaurant bill to become the most memorable part of your holiday.

Getting There

Head south from Place du Capitole towards Esquirol and the Carmes quarter. La Gouaille is at 6 Rue Joutx Aigues, close to Place des Carmes. Nearest métro: Carmes (B) or Esquirol (A).

Harry’s Take

My good-value dinner pick.

La Braisière restaurant interior

La Braisière

Traditional dinner · Toulouse

If you are after a traditional evening meal in Toulouse, La Braisière is an option worth considering. The appeal is familiar cooking and a proper restaurant dinner, without automatically jumping to the city’s more expensive special-occasion addresses.

Getting There

From Place des Carmes, continue south along Rue Pharaon towards Place du Salin. La Braisière is at number 42. Nearest métro: Carmes (line B).

Harry’s Take

My reasonably priced classic dinner recommendation.

Au Poussin Bleu pâtisserie

Au Poussin Bleu

A pastry stop can be one of the small pleasures of exploring Toulouse, and Au Poussin Bleu is a place to keep in mind for just that. It is an easy choice when you want a sweet break, something for breakfast, or a little treat alongside your morning coffee.

Getting There

Head south through the old centre to the Carmes district, then towards 45 Rue du Languedoc. The shop has a distinctive blue frontage. Nearest métro: Carmes (line B).

Harry’s Take

My favourite for viennoiseries.

Pâtisserie Conté

Pâtisserie Conté

Marché Victor Hugo, Toulouse

Marché Victor Hugo

Food market · Toulouse

Marché Victor Hugo is one of Toulouse’s most distinctive food-market experiences. Start among the covered stalls, where shopping is part of the entertainment, then look at the dining options around and above the market if you are ready to turn browsing into lunch.

Getting There

From Place du Capitole, walk northeast towards Place Wilson, then continue to the covered market on Place Victor Hugo (around 7–10 minutes). Nearest métro: Capitole or Jean-Jaurès.

Harry’s Take

My pick for a wide choice of reasonably priced lunches.

Flowers Café terrace

Glacier Pilat

Glacier Pilat

An ice-cream stop is a simple reward after a long walk through Toulouse, particularly on a warm afternoon. Glacier Pilat is worth keeping in your back pocket for that moment when you have seen enough churches and brick façades and want something cold and sweet instead.

Getting There

From Place du Capitole, head east towards Place Wilson and turn into Rue Montardy. Glacier Pilat is at number 28. Nearest métro: Jean-Jaurès (A/B) or Capitole (A).

Harry’s Take

My favourite ice cream place.

La Faim des Haricots

La Faim des Haricots

Vegetarian · Toulouse

La Faim des Haricots gives visitors a vegetarian dining option in Toulouse. If you are travelling with someone who would prefer a meat-free meal, it is useful to have a specific restaurant in mind rather than hoping the next menu happens to offer enough choice.

Getting There

From Place du Capitole, walk south into the Saint-Rome pedestrian quarter and look for Rue du Puits Vert. The restaurant is at number 2 bis. Nearest métro: Capitole or Esquirol (A).

Harry’s Take

My vegetarian recommendation.

Le Bar Basque terrace

Le Bar Basque

Beer garden · Toulouse

Le Bar Basque is a convivial place to consider for drinks, especially when Toulouse gives you the weather for sitting outside. Its appeal is the chance to settle in, enjoy the atmosphere and watch the city go by, rather than rushing from one monument to the next.

Getting There

From Place du Capitole, walk west along Rue Gambetta and Rue Pargaminières towards the Garonne. Le Bar Basque is on Place Saint-Pierre, number 7. Nearest métro: Capitole (A).

Harry’s Take

My beer-garden pick.

Galeries Lafayette rooftop

Galeries Lafayette rooftop

Rooftop drinks · Toulouse

For a different perspective on central Toulouse, the Galeries Lafayette rooftop can be a rewarding place to look across the city. The draw is the elevated view as much as the possibility of a drink, making it a natural short stop on a day spent exploring the centre.

Getting There

From Place du Capitole, walk east to Rue Lapeyrouse near Place Wilson. Enter Galeries Lafayette at numbers 4–8 and check the signs or lifts for rooftop access. Nearest métro: Capitole (A).

Harry’s Take

A cool rooftop bar.

La Maison Soclo garden

La Maison Soclo

Cocktails & brunch · Toulouse

La Maison Soclo is a lovely option to remember for cocktails or brunch, particularly if you appreciate a setting with a little more breathing room. The hidden garden is a large part of its appeal and gives a visit a slower, more relaxed feel than a quick stop at a busy bar.

Getting There

From Place du Capitole, head west into the Saint-Pierre quarter towards Rue Valade. Maison Soclo is at 34 bis Rue Valade, close to the river; look for the discreet entrance. Nearest métro: Capitole (A).

Harry’s Take

An amazing hidden garden, and a great brunch.

The London Town pub

The London Town

Pub & darts · Toulouse

The London Town offers a traditional pub atmosphere in Toulouse, with two dartboards to give an evening a bit of friendly competition. It is a good choice when the group would rather have a drink and do something together than simply sit at another café table.

Getting There

From Place des Carmes, head west towards Rue des Prêtres. The London Town pub is at number 14. Nearest métro: Carmes (line B).

Harry’s Take

This was my local for years.

Chez Émile restaurant

Chez Émile

Michelin Guide selection · Toulouse

Chez Émile is a classic Toulouse address for traditional cooking and cassoulet. It appears in the Michelin Guide selection, which is worth noting, but that does not mean it holds a Michelin star. Consider it when the meal itself is an important part of your visit.

Getting There

From Place du Capitole, walk east through the pedestrian streets to Place Saint-Georges. Chez Émile is at number 13, on the square. Nearest métro: Capitole (line A).

Harry’s Take

The classic option with Michelin Guide recognition.

Marché Cristal market

Marché Cristal

Street market · Toulouse

Marché Cristal gives you a glimpse of everyday Toulouse beyond the main tourist attractions. The open-air stalls are a place to browse fresh produce and watch local shopping life unfold, making this more about the market’s rhythm and atmosphere than any one purchase.

Getting There

From Place du Capitole, head northeast towards Boulevard de Strasbourg and Boulevard d’Arcole. The outdoor stalls line the boulevards near Jeanne d’Arc. Nearest métro: Jeanne d’Arc (line B).

Harry’s Take

A proper local market.

Marché Saint-Aubin market

Marché Saint-Aubin

Getting There

From Jean-Jaurès métro, walk east towards the Saint-Aubin church on Boulevard Michelet. The outdoor market surrounds the church on Sunday mornings. Nearest métro: Jean-Jaurès (A/B).

Harry’s Take

One of the markets visitors should know.

Marché Saint-Cyprien

Covered market · Toulouse

Crossing the Garonne to Saint-Cyprien brings you to a different part of Toulouse, and its covered food market is a good reason to make the journey. Browse the stalls, enjoy the neighbourhood setting and combine the visit with a wander on the west bank.

Getting There

From the city centre, cross Pont-Neuf towards Saint-Cyprien and continue to Place Roguet. The covered market is beside the square. Nearest métro: Saint-Cyprien République (line A).

Harry’s Take

A market worth crossing the river for.
